Winter Holiday Tips for your Pets
The end of the year signals the arrival of the exciting and busy holiday months. While fall and winter seasons are an exciting time for family, friends and fun, an increase in travel and visitors causes stress for your pet as well as you. Use these holiday tips to avoid potential dangers and help you and your animals get through the holidays just a little easier.
Food
Stick to a normal diet. In addition to the probems noted below, this reinforces a routine that pets need to feel secure.
Resist the temptations to "treat" your pets from the table. This can lead to indigestion, upset tummies, vomiting, or diarrhea.
Do not feed pets chocolate, nuts, or candy. Nuts and hard candy may cause choking, while chocolate contains theobromine, which can be toxic to pets.
Guests
- Create a special place for you pet away from all the noise and activity.
- Allow your animal to get used to spending time in this space by placing litter box, favorite toys, etc. in the room about two weeks before guests are expected.
- Place a Do Not Disturb sign on the door to keep guests from startling your pet.
Decorations
- Decorations are an open invitation to play for most pets. Keep tempting items out of reach and make sure all decorations are "pet proof."
- Glimmering and dangling ornaments on your christmas tree are a temptation to animals. This includes favorites such as garland and tinsel, which animals may be prone to chew or eat. Be sure to keep tempting items above your pet's reach and consider anchoring the bottom of your tree so pets can't tip it over.
- Keep a screen around your fireplace and make sure stockings or other items can't be dragged into the fire by pets. Do not leave pets unattended in a room with a fireplace or lit candles.
